The mouse we use with our PC is so called because of its resemblance to the tiny rodent. Likewise we speak of fish-eyed lenses, books being dog-eared, cat's eye reflectors, vaulting horses. Likening familiar objects to members of the animal kingdom is as common today as ever.

Examples of this in the Seto product range include the Hohonga book covers, inspired by the similarity between the book covers used to wrap books, and a flying squirrel (momonga) hugging a book to it. Butterfly-hat express the emergence of butterfly by unfolding the rounded hat.

"Likening" is all about imagination. Likening familiar objects to different creatures makes everyday living a little more fun. Once you see something as a living creature, you become very attached, and never want to go without it. But it's more than that: likening everyday objects to animals also means thinking about the true essence of things.
